About a year ago, Hart Island is now maintained by prisoners on Riker’s Island.
In 2007, the Bronx-based grassroots organization Picture the Homeless was granted limited visitation rights to Hart Island.
Some sources indicate that “hart” refers to an English word for “stag,” other sources claim the island was given the name when it was used as a game preserve.
The abundance of abandoned asylums and psychiatric hospitals in the New England area create the bulk of the locations here; these beautiful state funded structures are vast and complex, giving insight to both the humanity and mistreatment towards the mentally ill over the past two centuries. All non-user contributed content is © Tom Kirsch, unless noted otherwise. Hart Island is situated in the Bronx, west of City Island. The first child to die of AIDS in NYC was buried in isolation on the southern tip of the island, and was given a special grave stone marked "SC-B1, 1985" (SC = special child, B1 = Baby 1).
During the next few decades, the facilities on the island would focus on experimental pilot programs such as a tubercularium, the "six point" program for alcoholics (1952), and the Phoenix House for substance abuse (1967).
Melinda Hunt, an artist who started photographing the toppled grave markers in the early 1990s, started amassing a database that is considered more complete than official records, made through a Freedom of Information Act request. Photographs are not permitted on Hart Island. Our trip took off from City Island which, in contrast to Hart Island, is a picturesque fishing village in the Bronx with a nautical museum, the Royal Tenenbaums’ summerhouse, and Pelham Cemetery which overlooks Hart Island. Trenches are about ten feet deep, three-people high in rows of six for adults. After forty minutes of viewing in the gazebo area, talking with Officer Thompson, and paying our respects at the tombstone with flowers and rocks, we went back to the boat.
Unknown adults are buried in single plots, and are the most often disinterred and identified using medical data from surviving relatives. Our officer told us that the prisoners who conduct the burials are serving small sentences, a maximum of one year for non-violent crimes.
Once the federal government had no use for the island, it was purchased by New York City in 1868 for $75,000.
Hart Island was part of New York City even before Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx or Staten Island. The reformatory became a small city unto itself, with about 24 buildings connected with paved streets.
After that, we had to leave our phones and any other electronic devices behind. While family members can now research records online and arrange visits via application, non-family members can access a small gazebo area on the east side of the island every third Thursday of the month. They work hard at their jobs earning 50 cents an hour and it’s considered a plum assignment at Riker’s where the prisoners get a rare opportunity for fresh air and to work in the outdoors.Showing us a map of the island, Thompson pointed out there is a peace monument on the northern tip of the island for World War II and a Civil War monument on eastern side.I asked Officer Thompson if it was true that one million bodies were buried on Hart Island. The city condemned the property to prevent the completion of the park, and Mr. Riley eventually sold the land to the city for $144,000.Escapes were not uncommon, even without the amusement park to aid in sumggling. In the past, the trenches were re-used after 25-50 years of decomposition; workers would dig up the decayed remains and toss aside any remaining bones to make room for the pine boxes. Whenever I try to do the math, it doesn’t make sense.” He also noted that burials go through waves. Hart Island has been used by the city as a public cemetery for over 150 years and is managed by the Department of Correction. Hart Island, a seven-minute ferry ride from the seaside town of City Island, was completely closed off to the public until 2012, with the exception of … Identified adults are in 3-sectioned trenches of 48 bodies for easier disinterment; their caskets are stacked three high and two across. In 1955 a Nike missile launch site was constructed on the island to protect the city during the Cold War era (The aforementioned Phoenix House was a product of a three million dollar renovation of the work houses, funded by NYC in 1967. A prisoner named Joseph "The Eel" Farrell bragged that he swam to Long Island in 1919, and escaped once again to the Bronx in 1921.In 1928, Hart Island was primarily an overflow facility for prison overcrowding, and during World War II it was used as a disciplinary camp for over 2,000 Navy and Coast Guard troops.
These days, bodies that go unclaimed within seven days, those who can’t afford burial, and stillborn infants whose parents sometimes unwittingly sign for a “city burial” are buried on Hart Island. Getting caught on Hart Island is considered trespassing on prison property, and carries a sentence of 2 years in prison. The grisly work of the trenching is performed by Rikers Island inmates, given a 50-cent an hour wage, and under close supervision by DOC officers. A burial on Hart Island is vaguely defined as a "City Burial" on official paperwork. “I don’t understand where that number comes from. It proved to be a successful model program where former addicts could help others perform disciplined abstinence, but did not last long on the island itself. It failed due to the lack of convictions in municipal courts, and the area is now used for accommodating the burial detail and correction officers. The primary focus of Hart Island has been being a potter's field for the city from 1869 to the present day. Prisoners have managed to leave the island by swimming, climbing onto waiting motorboats, or even simply running over the ice in the winter to City Island.
