Dreamers of the Day has heart and authenticity like no other. The others in company are Winston and Clementine Churchill, their newly appointed bodyguard, Walter Thompson, Colonel T. E. Lawrence, Lady Gertrude Bell, and a charming German who may or may not be a spy; all of whom have plans for the Kurds, Shi'a, Sunnis, Jews, Turks, et al of the stony region. One of Russell's unique strengths, particularly in sci-fi/fantasy, is how deeply she is able to develop her characters without sacrificing the progression of the plot, and this book may be her triumph in that regard, if for no other reason than that the main character/narrator, Agnes Shanklin, is so fully realized that everything else pales in comparison. Synopsis 'I am sure of this much: my little story has become your history. I read about Barnett's journey while I, myself, was headed to England for the first time. Refresh and try again. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act on their dreams with open eyes, to make them possible." But there is irony here too. Agnes is an ideal foil for the machinations of the mighty. At other times, however, Agnes' self-contained universe has the unfortunate consequence of diminishing the significant historical events she witnessed (the Great War, the Pandemic of 1918, and especially the Cairo Conference of 1921). £7.99; £7.99; Publisher Description 'I am sure of this much: my little story has become your history. Now that there is much discussion of the processes involved in setting up borders in the Middle East post WWI, (Cairo Peace talks) I remembered this book and would recommend it highly . After WWI, and Wilson's failed attempt to make a lasting peace, and the 1918 influenza pandemic, and the Cairo conference of 1921 where the European powers divided the Middle East into the most convenient mishmash for their agenda; a shuffling of the board that resonates to this day. –T.E. “When it comes down to it, I don't have much in the way of advice to offer you, but here it is: Read to children.
